Positive Lessons from Hunt for the Wilderpeople
In the movie Hunt for the Wilderpeople there are a lot of lessons to be learned in this hilarious, amusing, and fun movie that teaches us how to be better overall people. Mixed in with all this movie’s humor there are some great teachings. This is a movie about a foster child who is dealing with going to different places all the time because his mom left him when he was a baby. It starts with him living with his new foster parents, Bella and Hector. Bella is very caring and loving for Ricky, but Hector is not as enthusiastic. Suddenly after a few weeks Bella dies from an unknown cause and Ricky is forced to be sent back, but he has other plans. Ricky decides of escape and runs into the woods to survive, not long after that Hector runs after him and they agree to live together in the woods, on a long adventure of running and escape with their two dogs. In this adventure, they get into lots of trouble and try to keep each other alive. After a while they get caught by the police and it’s all over. Three positive life lessons Junior High students could learn from Hunt for the Wilderpeople are give people a chance, think before you act, and don’t give up.
One positive idea that this movie teaches and shows is give people a chance before thinking they’re a bad person. One piece from this movie that shows that this is true is in the beginning of the movie. Hector didn’t like or trust Ricky Baker, even though he never spoke or paid attention to him. After Bella died, he was forced to care for Ricky because he was the only one to take care of him after he ran. Once he started talking and interacting with Ricky, he began to like him and work with him. Another piece of evidence that shows people should give others a chance is when Ricky first came to the house, he gave Bella, his foster parent a chance and it all worked out. They were happy and they were learning new things together and having a great time, until Bella died. The last piece of evidence is Ricky trusted the family in the house with the girl on the horse and the dad who was a fan of him. He may have had some ups and downs because he worried about not getting back to Hector in time, but in the end it all worked out.
A second positive idea in Hunt for the Wilderpeople is think before you act and say. Ricky did a lot of stupid stuff throughout the movie because he didn’t consider or speculate what was going to happen, like when he shot Hector, or when he burned down the barn and put a plastic body of himself which was obviously fake, or when he decided to run away in the first place by himself. If he thought before doing these things he would have done them more efficiently or not done them at all. Secondly, the dogs chasing after the boar in the woods. If they thought before rushing in, Zag wouldn’t have died and Hector and Ricky wouldn’t have had to grieve for him. If Hector thought before running out to save Ricky and let him stay with him to live in the woods they wouldn’t have had to run away from the cops for so long and he wouldn’t have been framed as a pervert and a molester. South East Junior High students often don't think before they talk, and can be very offensive in class and in the hallways. If they thought before they did so, they wouldn’t be making social mistakes.
Finally, the last positive lesson from this story is don’t give up right away, and never quit. During the whole movie Ricky never gave up and kept evading the police all the way until the end because he wanted to be free and stay with Hector. They may have been caught but at least they learned and had a good time together, developing a great bond between each other, and in the end, they were reunited and lived together. The foster care people never gave up chasing after Ricky and Hector. They were strong minded in ‘never leave a child behind’, and went after them for a really long time. Last of all, Bella never gave up on trying to take care of Ricky until she died and it made him feel special and it pushed him to staying free. This can connected to South East Junior High students, like when they take tests, students sometimes have a struggling time with that test and it may make them want to give up and quit, even though they shouldn’t and they should keep pushing through it and do the best they can, maybe in the end they will get a good grade.
In all, looking at the movie seriously and past all it’s funny jokes, it teaches us many important positive life lessons that we could use for the rest of our lives. It’s really how Ricky Baker and the people who learn to care for him or around him act throughout the movie, there were a lot of serious lessons hidden inside a movie full of laughter. All junior high students should watch this movie because it gives you a good laugh but also teaches great lessons that you can keep with yourself for the rest of your life, and these things are good to live by in everyday occasions.

Cell Phones in School
The student is working in class, suddenly the lesson about American Presidents bores the mind. Without thought the student pulls out their phone and checks their instagram. “Just for a little” thinks the student. They end up missing the whole class period and they just went over a very important review for the test that will take most the points for the trimester. In the end the student has to stress and work hard to get ready for the test or they do nothing and get an F for the rest of the trimester in American Studies. This is what happens for many students because they get distracted by their phones a lot. The main problem that I have with phones is that students shouldn’t bring their phones to school at all. Largely because their education is getting affected and it gets harder for the teachers to teach well with this complicated problem that phones in school have caused. Although students could use cell phones for educational purposes, it is better to keep them away from the classroom. Cell phones only distract students, they can be used for cheating and bullying, and students should take a break from being on their phones all day.
One of the main reasons I think cell phones should be kept out of schools is cell phones will only distract students. There are many problems with bringing phones into the classroom. One of the problems is that they distract them. If students were allowed to keep bringing in their phones they will get less education in daily. While they’re in class they will end up missing everything and have bad grades. The more kids are on their phones in class the higher potential that they don’t learn important things in class. If a student gets bored with studies how hard would it be to take out their phone and check news feed or twitter, snapchat, instagram, and other online social apps? Video games on their phones are also very easy to access and it keeps them interacted while they get bored of listening to class lectures or directions. If students can just reach into their pocket and play their ‘interesting’ games or listen to music and go on social apps for the ‘boring’ class then what is the point of having the phone in the class in the first place if all its going to do is distract, not just the student individually but the teacher who will have to stop the class to grab the attention of the student which will distract the rest of the class from whatever they were doing. If the kids didn’t bring their phones to school they would not have any of these distractions and class would run smoothly, the student would be more involved in the classroom and will actually start learning.
Another reason is phones are often used for cheating and cyberbullying. Other than getting distracted there are still many other reasons backing up the idea that students should not be allowed to bring their phones to class. This reason is very important, to the future and well-being of the child. Tests are a big deal in the educational world, they show what the student knows and how hard they worked to understand the subject. On the matter of cyberbullying it can affect many things. If a student is getting cyberbullied that just leads on to more bullying in the real world. That can really affect the student's health, socially, mentally, and physically. Many online predators can mess with students through these sights which is dangerous and uncomfortable for the student. It is very easy to talk to each other while in school and in class, spreading rumors easily throughout the day which leads back to distracting, but i’m talking about rumors and cyber bullying and how easy it can be spread throughout the school. Students can also easily take pictures and send texts to themselves with the answers and cheat on tests very easily. For the online predators they can super easily follow the students every move on these online social sites, and it would be better for the students to stay away from it as much as they could, which includes during school, other students in the school could even be predators. So we need to keep strong precautions to keep our students safe and comfortable. Reasoning for the easy access to talking to each other through texts just leads back to distracting and cyberbullying. Like spreading a rumours about other students and making fun of students through texts, which happens very often. Cheating has been seen everywhere, just recently in my math class we used to be able to use phones for calculators but now we aren’t allowed to anymore because of students taking pictures and sending the answers to each other through the phones during the test.
Finally, my last main reason is that students should take a break from using cell phones all day. Students have been using their technology too much in this generation and it's made us lazy cell phones are one of the main things that we use all the time because it's easy to bring everywhere and there are fun and interesting games and apps they can use. Some 88% of teens in the age range of 13 to 17 own a cell phone. 92% go on daily and more than 50% go on several times a day. 24% are on their phones almost constantly. A lot of students are on their phones most of the day and they all could take a break from using it and going into the classroom to learn and study. Personally at my school most of the kids I know are always on their phones, maybe not literally but in class when they aren’t supposed to, and out of school, in lunch or anytime or any other they can. This isn’t good for their health and we should really try to limit the time they stare at the screen and lay around while playing with it.
Some people that are pro taking phones to school may say that it could help students with their education and that we need to readjust to the new generation. I can prove that remark to be wrong. I agree that we may have to readjust to the new generation of student, but I think we could do it in a different way. Most school districts have already gotten smart boards for every class. With this it's easier to use then a white board and you can put everything you need on it for your whole class to see, students can’t control the smart board and yet the classroom is still using new better technology. Many teachers use the smartboard for watching videos that will catch the students attention. Or they will use their computers for outloud readings. This adjusts to the new generation and still keeps the teacher in charge of the class. So why do we still need to bring phones to school. Another argument that a parent may even say is it’s easier for the student to get in touch with their parents. During school students don’t need to speak to a teacher unless there is an emergency, and if there is they can call into the office and such. If a parent wants to pick up a student after school then talk to them before school and ask when they want to be picked up. That's how it was for years before and it never became a problem, it’s just us humans getting lazier and lazier with the new technology doing everything for us.
As you can see, many of these students get affected in school by these mobile phones, they get distracted easily, bullying other kids and cheating on important tests had never been more simple, and students are always on their phone so why can’t we just change that by not letting them bring it to school. Even if these phones could be used as pros in the classroom there are too many cons for us to let them into our schools. We can’t have kids get their whole school year in rumbles just because they got bored of their lesson and got on their phones. Cell phones really can hurt our school district if we let them into our learning areas. School sets up students for their future and their life, it is a necessity that they have a good education in our era. If something can effect our students learning, we need to deal with it right away and that’s why I think we should keep these cell phones away from school.
